The discography of Orquesta Revé has its mysteries due to the long history of this band (more than 50 years) but also due to the unfortunate absence of the recording year on some discs edited.
Furthermore, almost all vinyl discs issued before 1993 were not re-issued in CDs. As a consequence out of Cuba, apart from anthology discs, very little is known about the entire works of this legendary orchestra.
Before the revolution, the Orquesta Revé has recorded its first works with the label RCA Victor in 1958. It was actually two 45 rpm discs which were holdingf the following tracks : "Lo trajo Revé", "Como pita el camión", " Se va pa'l monte" and "Toma tilo".
What followed was a pretty irregular production that was due, according to the musicologist Cristóbal Díaz Ayala, to “some heights in their creative history as well as some reorganizations”.
These heights or these reorganizations happened during different periods and are merely due to the personal involvement of Elio Revé in historical events of his own country or due to his evolving artistic requirements.
1959 until 1966 were the Revolution years during which Elio Revé participated in events such as the alphabetization, the crisis of the missiles and of the attack in Playa Giron.
In 1966 he restructured his band and the following year he invites Juan Formell to join the group and they record their first discs, precisely in 1968.
Those were 2 EPs of the AREITO EGREM label which held 8 tracks, ("Ya estoy aquí", "Que bolá, que bolón", "El martes", "No me dejes así", "Fifí,Teté y Popó", "Tu ya no existes", "Tu amor y el sol", "Encuentro y partida")all composed and arranged by Juan Formell.
The Orquesta Reve records for the same label, successively in 1969 and in 1970, two 45 RPM discs which contained the following songs: “Compay Zenon” - “El changuì està en la calle” (1969) and “Yo me voy para la zafra” – “Changuì morena” (1970).
In 1971 and in 1972, two 45 RPM discs are released for the GUAMA EGREM label: “La batea” – “Dominga” (1971) y “Todo es nuevo” – “La ultima cancion” (1972).
Their first LP disc is released in 1972 with the Peruvian label MAG. This disc was called “De La Habana a Lima”. It is also important to mention the release of the disc “El Ritmo Changuì”, an Anthology LP that was in fact issued in 1979 but which published recordings of previous periods.
Between 1975 and 1977, Elio Revé did not record any discs because he took part of the war in Angola.
When he returned, he founded the Orquesta Elio Revé y su Rumbantela.
Germán Velasco, Juan Munguía, Félix Baloy, Odelquis Revé were members of this band that unfortunately did not record any disc.
In 1982 the disc “Elio Revè y su Ritmo Changuì” is released and represents another significant transition step in the discography of Elio Revé. This is the debut of El Charangon, a name that Revé gave to his band because of the refusa by Cuban Music organizations to classify his orchestra as a Charanga since it did not comply any longer to their traditional format.
Another important reorganization occurred in 1985 when the following musicians joined the band : Juan Carlos Alfonso on piano, Alfonsito, El Padrino and Valentin as singers, Adonis on Congas, Oderquis Reve playing Bongos, Cowbells and Bata drums, Camue, Romil and Marcelo on Trombones, Raul Martinez playing Guiro, Pipo Fendez on Bass, Moya on violin and Papi Oviedo on Tres.
When Juan Carlos Alfonso decided to found his Dan Den in 1988, Revé selected Tony Gomez as pianist who stayed in the Charangon until 1992.
Peter Gabriel produces the record “La explosion del momento” in 1989 during the full explosion of so called World Music. This record has the same title of that issued in 1987. In spite of that it is an anthology of all pieces issued between 1985 and 1988.
During 1995 the Charangon of Revé takes part to the discographical project “Tributo ad Augusto” with the song “Ricordati di Chico” dedicated to the memory of Chico Mendes, brasilian union leader killed in 1988.
In 1997 Elio Revé died and in 1999 a first disc of the Charangon is released with his son, Elito, as the director of the band
This discography lists all recordings made under the name of Orquesta Reve, including anthology discs, that have been issued until today.
